Before and during the visit of Mr. Alava

Exposition: The story begins in the barrio of Pugad Lawin, where a public school, Pugad Lawin High School is located. Mr. Obles, the principal, received a letter from the sleepy janitor that there will be a yearly visitation by the superintendent, the district supervisors, and the division supervisors for inspection and evaluation. After all morning classes were dismissed, the action begins to rise.

Rising Action: The conflict in the story is when the teachers, students, and staff were divided into four working groups in preparation for the arrival of the superintendent and the supervisors. The first group is headed by Mrs. Divinagracia, the harassed Home Economics instructor, and with some lady teachers, were assigned to the kitchen to prepare menu for the visitors. The teachers of Group Two were assigned to fix the beddings and prepare the utensils, pillows, and sleeping mats for the supper and sleeping preferences. "Structuring the Rooms" was the responsibility of the third group, and the fourth group is under the stewardship of Miss Noel, the English instructor, together with the freshman boys, assigned to "Landscaping the Premises".

Climax: The climax of the story is the conversation between Miss Noel and Mr. Sawit had after the visitation turns out well. It is in the point that Miss Noel seems that all the visitation were all planned out. Also, a visitation announced a month before defeats the purpose, and how the school hides all the bad things and reveal the good ones only just to impress their gods.

Falling Action: The denoument of the story is while Miss Noel was impaling the coffee cups, a student named Leon came to approach her. During their conversation, she realized all the sacrifices being a teacher is not easy, she also realizes that if she had left her job being a teacher, what will happen to her student Leon? Leon wanted to become a lawyer someday. In the end of the day, she chose to stay in as a teacher to lead/guide her students for a better future.

Ending: After breakfast the next morning, the supervisors packed their belongings and were soon ready. They all posed on the sunny steps for a souvenir photo in accordance to their positions on the Home Economics stairs. Despite the fact that Miss Noel was late, but she ran to take her place with pride and humility on the lowest rung of the school's hierarchy.

Symbolism: The first symbolism is the superintendent, the district supervisors, and the division supervisors were compared to gods. It represents the supreme beings that the school had to prepare delicious food, clean and beautify the surroundings of the school, entertain the gods in order to appreciate the school. Second is, the offerings. It symbolizes the gifts/sacrifices that the school would give to the gods they wanted to pleased. Lastly, the scene where Miss Noel compared herself to a missionary. It symbolizes the sacrifices that she did in her life for the sake of his students, and to guide her students in the right path.

Theme: The theme of the story shows the management of Filipino educational system and how unequal or unfair life is. It shows how Filipinos are hospitable in their homes or in everywhere else. In where they tend to always prepare and beautify their surroundings just to impress their visitors.

Lesson: Providing service with all of your heart and extending charity through actions toward others helps us to be less challenging in life.
