Title: A Night in the Hills

Author: Paz Marquez-Benitez

Author's Background: Paz Marquez-Benitez (1894 - 1983) was a Filipina short-story writer. Marquez-Benitez authored the first Filipino modern English language short story, Dead Stars, published in the Philippine Herald in 1925. Born into the prominent Marquez family of Quezon province, she was among the first generation of Filipino people trained in the American education system which used English as the medium of instruction. She graduated high school in Tayabas High School now, Quezon National High School. She was a member of the first freshman class of the University of the Philippines, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1912. Marquez-Benitez later became a teacher at the University of the Philippines, who taught short-story writing and had become an influential figure to many Filipino writers in the English language, such as Loreto Paras-Sulity, Paz M. Latorena, Arturo Belleza Rotor, Bienvenido N. Santos and Francisco Arcellana. The anually held Paz Marquez-Benitez Lectures in the Philippine honors her memory by focusing on the contribution of Filipino women writers to Philippine Literature in the English language.

Setting: A long time ago in Intramuros, Philippines

Exposition: The story begins when Gerardo Luna, the protagonist, a jewelry store salesman was introduced. He has always dreamed to go to the forest from his childhood which he regards as a beautiful place. When Gerardo meets Ambo, the action begins to rise.

Rising Action: The conflict of the story is when a day where Gerardo met Ambo, an orchid gatherer, tells Gerardo about living in the forest for weeks at a time, but his wife is focusing only the business aspect of the idea.

Climax: When Gerardo's wife dies at last, he can finally fulfill his longtime dream to go to the forest together with Ambo.

Falling Action: The denoument of the story is when Ambo anf Gerardo went to the hills. It is in the point where Gerardo realized the opposite experiences nature in a manner that is not that wonderful to him in his dream. He was tired, sweaty, and uncomfortable as the journey to the forest went through. During that night, he was thinking of his wife and also God.

Ending: When Gerardo goes back home, he feels he should go back to reality and meets Peregrina.

Symbolism: The only symbolism that I found out in the story is Gerardo's dream of going to forest symbolizes the inner peace or freedom that he wanted to felt. We always think that all things around us are good but in the end you will be surprised of the unexpected things to come in your way.

Theme: The theme of the story depicts that things or dreams are not always applicable in real life and happens exactly.

Lesson: Life is full of surprises. The worst nightmare is when you realize your dreams will never come true. You'll never know if you believe that some miracle is about to happen.
